Nurses lucky knife attack was not fatal

A security manager at Waikato hospital says two nurses who fought off an attacker armed with a knife, are lucky the attack was not fatal.

The incident happened just after 10pm on Thursday, when the nurses, both women in their early 20s, were sitting in their car talking before starting a nightshift.

Hospital security manager Dean Ria said the man forced his way into the car and threatened them with a knife.

He said the nurses were very courageous confronting their attacker by punching and kicking him until he fled the scene.
