Northland plan to ease building on Maori land

10:16 am on 18 May 2009

Northland councils have agreed to work together to make it easier for Maori to build on multiply-owned land.

Whangarei deputy mayor Kahu Sutherland says the proposed papakainga framework, which also involves Te Puni Kokiri and social service provider Te Hau Ora O Kaikohe, should mean less expense and red tape.

He told Waatea News the framework is long overdue and should also make it easier for whanau to get loans for housing.

About 5% of the land in Whangarei district is Maori land, as is 3% in Kaipara and almost 20% in the Far North.
