Principal sticking to his guns over payments

A college principal in Auckland is sticking to his guns in charging students extra for extra-curricular activities if their parents don't pay voluntary donations.

The Ministry of Education is seeking assurances from Macleans College that students are not having privileges withheld for non-payment of donations, and that fees are not being charged unlawfully.

The college asks for an annual donation of $490 and 85% of parents pay the donation.

Principal Byron Bentley said those who don't pay are charged extra for graduation dinners, balls and fees for Cambridge International exams.

He said none of the fees asked of those who don't pay the donation, are for activities related to the curriculum.
