Auckland power company Vector says last week's cold weather snap sent electricity use soaring.
Vector says the demand for power reached just over 1718 megawatts on 29 May, 200 mega-watts more than the same time last year.
Vector says the last night that electricity demand skyrocketed in a single day was in 2011 when Auckland experienced snow in some parts of the region.
The city hit a record demand of about 1850 megawatts.
Last week's stormy weather also brought down power lines across the city, and there were seven crashes involving a car and a power pole.
