Nelson property owners hit by a landslide two years ago say Wellington residents affected by a big slip over the weekend could have a long fight for compensation.
About eight properties in the suburb of Kingston are being assessed by the Earthquake Commission after Saturday's slip.
Nelson resident Caroline Wheeler lost part of her property in the 2011 landslide but says she has been left out of pocket.
Although her home and those of others were condemned by the local council, EQC will only pay out for land that has slipped away.
Retired couple Mary and Alan Pullar lost their home in the same landslide and say they are still fighting for compensation.
EQC says assesors are already working with the Wellington residents.
National operations manager Barry Searle says the legislation puts a limit of $100,000 on compensation for loss of land and anything more than that is a matter for insurers.
Mr Searle says complicated land claims can take as long as six months to resolve.
