Petition to stop school changes launched

3:05 pm on 5 June 2013

A Christchurch woman says she will fight the closure and mergers of 13 schools in the city and has launched a petition to stop them.

On 29 May, Education Minister Hekia Parata announced a decision to close seven primary and intermediate schools outright and close another three primary schools as part of mergers with other schools as part of education reforms in earthquake-hit Canterbury.

Unite Union orgainser Sharna Butcher has started the Save Our Schools petition in a bid to make Ms Parata halt the shake-up.

Ms Butcher says she is determined to stop the closures and will chain herself to a school fence if that is what it will take to get the Government to take notice.

The Mana Party supports thepetition and is expected to present it to Parliament later in June.
