Corrections Minister Judith Collins is visiting privately managed prisons in Australia and says she wants to find out why the country has persevered with private prisons.

Ms Collins says the next prison built is likely to be tendered for private management and she has not ruled out the possibility other prisons may be put in that category.
The minister says iwi involvement in the process is crucial as Maori comprise a significant proportion of prisoners.
