Kapiti council asks residents about fluoridation

Kapiti Coast District Council is to consult again with locals over whether to continue fluoridating local water supplies.

Fluoride is added to water supplied to Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati but not Otaki or Paekakariki.

Three years ago, the council canvassed public opinion on the issue, before voting to continue fluoridating the water.

Hamilton City Council voted last week to stop putting fluoride in its water supply after a three-day hearing with evidence from experts on both sides of the argument.

Kapiti Coast mayor Jenny Rowan says her council has received a number of submissions against fluoridation during consultation over its Annual Plan.

She says it is clear the issue won't go away, and community concerns need to be taken seriously.
