Closer monitoring of home detention wanted

The Sensible Sentencing Trust wants criminals serving home detention sentences subjected to more stringent monitoring.

Some 9.7% of those on home detention breached their conditions during December, compared to 3.5% in October 2007 when it was first introduced as a standalone sentence.

The trust says they need to be monitored more closely.

Law Society criminal law subcommittee convener Jonathan Krebs says home detention could be abolished if it looses its integrity.
