Police to use digital radio system

6:06 pm on 21 May 2009

Police are to use an encrypted digital radio system to prevent people from eavesdropping on their communications.

The new technology will be introduced in Wellington in June and extended to Auckland and Christchurch by the end of next year.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor says the new system will mean people can no longer use scanners to listen to police activity.

The technology will be extended to the rest of New Zealand over the next four years.
