Far North police are investigating a roadside incident in which a man was splashed with bleach and had a knife held to his throat.

The attack happened at the junction of State Highway 10 and Oromahoe Road, near Kerikeri, about 7am on Monday.

Police say the 45-year-old Northland Regional Council employee stopped his car after a vehicle travelling behind him repeatedly flashed its headlights.

After splashing the man and cutting his face with a knife, the two attackers took his cellphone and wallet and fled.

The man was taken to Bay of Islands Hospital and was discharged on Monday night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Burke said police do not know yet what prompted such a serious attack.
