Paraglider badly hurt after chute fails

8:59 pm on 10 June 2013

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after falling about 30 metres in a paragliding accident at a west Auckland beach.

Ambulance spokesperson Norm Ngatai says the 23-year-old fell on to rocks near Muriwai Beach just before 5pm on Monday after his paraglider chute collapsed.

Mr Ngatai says the man landed on his chute, which helped to break the fall. However, he suffered serious back injuries and was flown to Auckland Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson says the man is in a stable condition.
