A programme that helps to deter and catch burglars in schools, has been rolled out among South Island schools.

The Safer Schools programme was introduced in North Island schools about a year ago and since then burglaries in schools have reduced by more than 60%.

Senior Srgeant John Robinson saidols involved in the programme will receive a kit containing an invisible solution with numbered micro dots in it, which can be painted onto school equipment.

Solen goods can then be traced back to the school when they are found.

Randwick Park, a suburb in southern Auckland, saw a drop of 61% in school burglaries during a six-month trial of the programme.
