The Department of Conservation is spending $240,000 installing solar-powered hot water systems at some of its remote sites.

It hopes the project will cut its costs by about 80%.

Seventeen systems will be installed on island sites and nine on the mainland during the next six months.

DoC says the project should pay for itself in five years.
