The Auckland Theatre Company says a major new funding boost means work can begin on a waterfront theatre this year, but it will be asking the public to help come up with the last few million dollars.
AUT University has announced it will contribute $5 million towards the $35 million dollar project.
In return it will gain a 15% stake and a partnership with the theatre.
Waterfront Theatre Trust chair Ross Green says the funding is a game changer because it has pushed the money raised over the $30 million threshold.
Mr Green says the trust has already been talking to potential benefactors and is about to launch a fundraising campaign to raise the remaining $3.7 million needed.
"In the end, the last part of any fundraising campaign really comes down to contributions from the public," he says.
