A former council employee and a contractor have been found guilty of carrying out a decade-long scam that conned the North Shore City Council out of about $850,000.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) laid charges against Hemant Kumar Maharaj and Suresh Din in September 2010. The pair were convicted at Auckland District Court on Thursday and will be sentenced next month.

The SFO says Mr Maharaj was working for the council in 1999 when and he and Mr Din came up with a scheme to invoice the organisation for road and berm maintenance workthat was never actually done.
