A man carrying a gun tried to rob the Redwood Mobil service station, on the corner of Main North and Prestons Road, about 6.30pm on Thursday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney says the man threatened an employee with a pistol, reached over the counter to take the cash drawer but dropped it and left.

Mr Sweeney says the man ran out of the shop and and got into a light coloured four-door sedan.

He says officers have spoken to a number of witnesses but would still like to hear from anyone who may have seen the person before or during the attempted robbery.

The man was described as European, about 180cm tall and was wearing a dark green jacket with fluro red and silver V shaped markings.
