Primary school considers legal challenge to closure

A Christchurch school is seeking legal advice about whether it can challenge the Government's decision to merge it with another school.

Phillipstown School is one of three primary schools which will close as part of mergers with other schools in Christchurch.

Education Minister Hekia Parata announced in May that the primary school would be merged into Woolston School.

Phillipstown's board of trustees says Ms Parata's decision might not have complied with the Education Act.

Chairman Wayne West says the board has asked public law firm Chen Palmer to advise it on whether the decision was lawful.

Once that advice has been received the board will decide whether to challenge the decision in the courts.
