Parent calls for return of school to community

A parent in the Northland town of Moerewa says it's time the Government let her community take back the running of the local school.

The Minister of Education installed a commissioner at the school more than a year ago and sacked the board of trustees for resisting an order to send senior pupils to college.

Many parents refused to send their children to Bay of Islands College, saying their children were failing there in an unsympathetic culture.

Olive Brown, who has a daughter at Moerewa School, says the episode was traumatic for parents and pupils but the community has moved on and it's time the commissioner did too.

She says his salary would be better spent on children's learning.

The school's principal, Keri Milne-Ihimaera, has been unavailable to speak to the media since the commissioner was installed last year.
