Police defend armed presence at funeral

6:00 am on 26 May 2009

Police are defending the presence of armed officers at a Christchurch funeral where they were seeking to apprehend the deceased man's son.

The bodies of Tala Seleni and Melissa Nina Adcock were found in a house in the suburb of Philipstown earlier in May.

Police say no one is being sought in relation to the deaths.

However, they say they have been looking for Tasi Seleni since February regarding a number of serious violence offences.

A priest involved in the funeral says it was tactless of police to try to apprehend someone before the service.

Police say there were no officers inside the church or on cemetery grounds.

Tasi Seleni did not attend the service, but has since been apprehended.
