Pilots want runway extended at least 150m

The Airline Pilots Association wants the runway at Wellington airport extended by at least 150 metres to bring it in line with safety standards.

The runway was extended by 90 metres in 2006, but the association says 240 metres is the international standard for maximum safety.

The Wellington City Council and Wellington International Airport Ltd are considering a 300-metre extension to allow long-haul, twin-aisle jets.

Association technical director Stuart Julian said any extension should aim to achieve both an increase in tourists and safety.

Mr Julian said Auckland and Christchurch airports are already meeting maximum safety requirements and Wellington should as well.
