A man charged with kidnapping a woman who was dragged along behind his vehicle has pleaded guilty.

Sonny Waiti, 26, appeared in the Rotorua District Court on Thursday.

In May this year, Ana Eriepa was put in the boot by Waiti and managed to get free, but got her ankle caught between the bumper and tow bar and was dragged along State Highway 1 near Tokoroa for nearly 2km.

The 37-year-old eventually fell free, but suffered serious injuries. Her left leg had to be amputated below the knee and she received multiple abrasions and lacerations. She remains in Waikato Hospital in a stable condition.

The couple had been in a relationship for three weeks and Waiti told police he thought Ms Eriepa was cheating on him and to show her he loved her he put her in the boot.

Waiti has been remanded in custody for sentencing on 23 August.
