Anti-crime group abandons police recruitment plan

After an apparent misunderstanding with police, an Asian anti-crime group says it will stop trying to recruit officers from Singapore.

Asian Anti-Crime Group Chairman Peter Low says he was just trying to help boost the number of Asian police officers in New Zealand.

He says he approached police in February, offering to help them find new recruits in Singapore.

Mr Low says he later contacted police saying Singaporean employment agencies wanted to charge for the service.

Inspector Gary Allcock says Mr Low was thanked for his offer to help source recruits but was told is unacceptable for any fee to be paid for recruiting officers.

Peter Low faced criticism last year after suggesting the South Auckland community hire Triad members for security.
