Whanganui iwi are moving towards having a larger role in the management of the Whanganui National Park.

Waatea News reports a park management plan has been under review for the last 20 years. Iwi have consistently sought greater recognition and more involvement in management during that time.

Wanganui conservator Damian Coutts says steps are being taken to collaborate on running the 74,000 hectare park, to recognise a desire for a greater Maori flavour and sensitivity of sites.
