The police say a Manawatu farm worker who spent the night trapped under a quad bike was fortunate the bike's engine kept running.

The 21-year-old had a broken leg and was suffering from hypothermia when he was finally found this morning by the owner of the farm on Lethbridge Road, northwest of Feilding.

Sergeant David Burmeister from Feilding Police said weather conditions could have meant the outcome was much worse, but the bike's engine stayed running, keeping the man warm until it ran of petrol.

The farm worker is recovering in hospital.
