Couple died in suicide pact, coroner rules

The Wellington coroner has found a prominent Kapiti Coast couple died in a suicide pact after the husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Adrian Webster, 71 and his wife Marei Webster, 76, were found lying dead on a bed together at their Paekakariki home last year.

Mr Webster, who was the chair of the Paekakariki Community Board, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in April 2011.

In his report, coroner Garry Evans said there had been concerns from family about comments Mrs Webster made about her husband's deteriorating health and that she would not be able to live without him.

Mr Evans said their deaths attracted media attention and speculation as to how they died, and it was desirable that the true facts of their deaths be made known.

He suppressed how they died, saying there is no public interest in that.
