Work permit extensions wanted for jobless migrants

A petition is being launched calling for migrants who have been made redundant, allowing them more time to find another job and apply for new permits.

Migrante Aotearoa New Zealand says people facing redundancy are given short notice of between one week and one month to look for new employment.

It wants the Ministry of Immigration to extend work permits by at least three monthsfor migrants who have lost their job, saying that many have lost their residency application.

The petition says migrants sold their homes and assets in their home-country to move to New Zealand and have nothing to return to if they lose their job.

It says New Zealand encouraged migrants and their families to enter the country to fill labour shortages, and it should not throw them out when they are in need.
