Boy racers now attracting criminal element - MP

National MP Nicky Wagner says two recent pack attacks in Christchurch show that boy racer culture is now attracting a criminal element.

An Aviation Security Service officer says she was set upon by about 100 boy racers near Christchurch airport late on Wednesday night.

In January, a police officer was ambushed by about 300 boy racers, hurling bottles and firing an air rifle.

Ms Wagner says until recently, boy racers generally just caused noise and nuisance, but now it seems to be attracting those who want to be seen as "baddies".

She says strong action is needed to deter criminal behaviour among them.

National introduced two new bills targeting boy racers in the past week.

The legislation would strengthen the powers of the police and courts to deal with illegal street racing, including provisions to crush the cars of repeat offenders.

It would also allow local authorities to ban vehicles cruising city streets.
