A survey has found most young people aged under 30 in Auckland are not aware of the city's 30-year plan.

The Auckland Council has been told that awareness of the Unitary Plan is greatest amongst older residents, Pakeha and those living in the central suburbs.

The most contentious element of the Unitary Plan is proposed higher density housing to curb sprawl.

After months of debate, the online survey for the council found that 60% of those aged under 30 had not heard of the plan, while awareness was highest among the over-60s at more than 80%.
