The Hamilton City Council is to trial the use of wearable cameras for its parking wardens to protect them from verbal abuse and aggressive behaviour on the streets.
The cellphone-sized cameras will be switched on each time an officer encounters a motorist.
Parking manager John Purcell says experience in the United Kingdom show that cameras reduce verbal abuse by about 60%.
Mr Purcell says abuse can vary from verbal abuse to physical assault and last week a motorist drove on the footpath at a parking warden.
If the trial is successful other frontline staff such as animal control could use the cameras, he says.
