Residents of Petone have been warned not to swim, fish or collect shellfish after sewage seeped into Wellington harbour near Petone wharf on Wednesday morning.
Hutt City Council blames a small leak at the Regent Street pumping station in Petone.
It says work is underway to repair the leak which is being contained by a storage truck and suction pump.
Water tests are also being carried out.
