Fog blanketing part of Desert Road

6:13 pm on 1 June 2009

Fog on the Desert Road between Waiouru and Turangi, in the central North Island, is making conditions difficult for holiday motorists on Monday.

Visibility on the stretch of State Highway 1 has fallen to just metres around the summit area of the road. Police are advising motorists to reduce speed accordingly.

The road had been closed earlier due to ice.

The Transport Agency says alternative routes are open and motorists are urged to drive with caution.

Meanwhile, MetService has lifted heavy snowfall warnings for the east and lower North Island, saying the strong and very cold southerly flow should slowly ease.
