Boaties advised not to rely on GPS

9:29 pm on 1 June 2009

The Coastguard is advising boaties not to rely on Global Positioning Systems to do their navigating for them.

Mark Levers of the Northern Coastguard region says there have been cases of groundings, where people have switched on their GPS and autopilot, then found themselves where they did not expect to be.

Mr Levers says GPS can fail, depending on the location and availability of satellites serving the system.

He says boaties need to remember they must do their own navigating and watch where they are going.
