200 still without power since big storm

About 200 households and businesses in Wellington are still without power on Friday, eight days after a severe storm buffeted the region.

Customers without power are being asked to check Wellington Electricity's website to ensure that their street is still listed as requiring repair or call its customer service number.

Some 30,000 homes and businesses lost electricity during the storm on 20 June and repair crews have been working up to 15 hours a day since.

Wellington Electricity chief executive Greg Skelton said more than 150 lines workers from around the country are helping, but the remaining work is technically difficult and time-consuming.

Mr Skelton apologised to customers for the delay, but said repair crews deserve praise for their efforts.
