Migrants to discuss problems with minister

9:58 am on 2 June 2009

The Migrant Action Trust charity is seeking an urgent meeting with the Immigration Minister over persistent problems faced by people wanting to live and work in New Zealand.

About 160 immigrants have met with National Party list MP Jackie Blue to complain about inconsistency, inefficiency and stress in their dealings with Immigration New Zealand.

Mohamaden Kahn, from Fiji, says he had problems because his permit was for work as an administrator but he was offered a book-keeping job.

Vickie Rheeder, from South Africa, says her work permit will be void if her husband loses his job and she finds that ridiculous.

The Migrant Action Trust says Government policy is inconsistent and short sighted.

Jackie Blue says she will facilitate a meeting with the minister.
