Transport Minister Steven Joyce says he expects a final decision about banning the use of cellphones in cars to be made in September.

The Transport Ministry is preparing a report based on public consultation on the use of cellphones while driving.

Steven Joyce says he expects to hear from the ministry in the next few weeks and will take the recommendations to Cabinet.

He says it is his intention to go ahead with a ban on cellphone use while driving.

Mr Joyce says there are already laws in place about driver distraction and people should not be driving while using cellphones.

He says driver distraction is a significant issue in terms of road safety.
