Police say a man with stab wounds leapt from a moving vehicle in the Wellington suburb of Karori on Friday after an altercation in which another man suffered multiple serious stab wounds.

Police say a 21-year-old man was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition after the altercation at a house in Burrows Avenue.

They say mental health staff were taking the 22-year-old suspect, who received minor stab wounds, to the hospital when he leapt from the vehicle and ran off.

Police told St Teresa's School and West Karori School to lock down until the man was apprehended. He was found just after 1pm and taken away for questioning.
