Cook Islands police say serious charges are likely to be laid in relation to the death of a New Zealand man who was hit by a truck last week.

Duncan Barrowman, 43, was in Rarotonga for a rugby tournament when he was hit by the truck on Friday.

A local man has been charged with drink driving in relation to the crash.

Inspector Akatauira Matapo says there had been an exchange of words between the local man and some of Mr Barrowman's team mates the night of the crash.

He says there will be further investigations, depending on the result of a post mortem being carried out in New Zealand, and more charges could be laid when the accused re-appears in court on Friday.
