South Auckland police are reviewing footage of a pursuit, which ended when a car crashed and burst into flames.

The grey Nissan Skyline collided with a pole and then a concrete bus shelter at about 1.30am on Friday on Kirkbride Road in Mangere.

The 15-year-old driver managed to escape the burning vehicle and his passenger, also aged 15, had to be rescued by police, who arrived on the scene a short time after the crash.

The serious crash unit says it appears the vehicle's fuel tank ruptured causing fuel to leak and ignite shortly after impact.

A police spokesperson earlier said officers had stopped pursuing the vehicle before it crashed, but the officer in charge says the pursuit was still in place.

The chase was filmed by a police helicopter.

Inspector Shawn Rutene says the Independent Police Conduct Authority is investigating.
