A dramatic account of murder-accused Nai Yin Xue breaking into a man's house late at night in search of his estranged wife has been given to the High Court in Auckland.

Nai Yin Xue, 55, is on trial for the murder An An Liu, 28, in New Zealand in September 2007, before abandoning their daughter, then aged 3, at a Melbourne railway station.

The landlord of a house in Wellington where An An Liu was boarding told the court on Friday he awoke one night to a dog barking furiously and a man shining his torch onto his bed.

Weihong Song says he grabbed a gun from his safe and ran after the man but he was gone.

The Crown says the man was Nai Yin Xue, and that he later told friends it was him.
