Court throws out Edgeware Rd killer's appeal

An appeal by the man convicted of murdering two Christchurch teenagers by running them down has been dismissed.

Lipene Sila appealed against his conviction and 17-year sentence for killing Jane Young and Hannah Rossiter, both 16, when he drove a car into a crowd of party-goers on Edgeware Road in May 2007.

The Court of Appeal has released its decision and dismissed the case.

Sila, 24, appealed on the basis that the trial judge should have allowed the jury to consider self-defence and provocation.

Sila's lawyer Pip Hall said at the appeal hearing in April that Sila had feared for his life and had driven through the crowd - hitting 28 people in total - to reach safety.

But Crown prosecutor Brent Stanaway said Sila acted in anger and there was no evidence that he felt his life was in danger.
