Police in Rotorua are investigating the death of a one-year-old boy.
A woman has been charged with assaulting a child.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper says the boy, Trent James Matthews, also known as Michael Matthews, was found dead in a house in Edmund Road about 7.30am on Friday.
Results of a post-mortem were inconclusive and the outcome of further forensic testing is awaited to help establish how he died.
Police will not say what the relationship is between the dead boy and the woman.
She will reappear in Rotorua District Court on Wednesday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Loper says police have not been called to the house for family violence matters in the past.
