Probe into teen snowboarder's alcohol binge

Police in Wanaka are investigating how a 13-year-old snowboarder, found drunk and unconscious on Saturday night, got hold of alcohol.

The snowboarder was one of 33 youths staying at Base Backpackers in Wanaka during a four-day snow sport development camp.

Constable Greg Nolet says the boy drank 700 millilitres of spirits in about 20 minutes, fell unconscious and was put into an induced coma before being transferred to Dunedin Hospital.

He says it is possible the alcohol was stolen, and anyone found to be responsible will be referred to Youth Aid.

Snow Sports New Zealand head Ross Palmer says the 13-year-old was brought out of his induced coma on Sunday night and transferred to a general ward on Monday.

Mr Palmer says it is likely other teenagers were drinking as well but the youth was only one to get so intoxicated.
