Virologist issues flu jab plea

8:41 pm on 8 June 2009

A leading virologist is urging anyone who has not yet had a seasonal flu jab to get it as soon as possible.

June 30 is the deadline for those eligible for a free jab against seasonal flu to get it from their doctor.

Influenza immunisation is free for people over 65 and those at any age who have long-term health conditions including diabetes, asthma and heart disease.

Lance Jennings, spokesperson for the National Influenza Strategy Group, says the number of people getting the seasonal flu vaccine has been good this year.

Dr Jennings says there is still time to get the jab, and with swine flu around, it is especially advisable.
