Life parolee Dean Wickliffe faces drugs and firearms charges on Tuesday in Tauranga District Court.
The convicted killer has spent the greater part of his life behind bars, and has twice escaped from Paremoremo Prison.
He was recalled to prison after a police raid on his home in March last year.
The trial is expected to continue throughout the week.
