A former flatmate of Nai Yin Xue says she never heard him fight or argue with his wife An An Liu, whom he is accused of killing.
Ling Liu was giving evidence in Mr Xue's trial in the High Court at Auckland via a video link to China.
Mr Xue is charged with murdering his wife in September 2007 in Auckland.
Under cross-examination by Mr Xue's lawyer, Chris Comeskey, she said through a translator that Mr Xue and his wife seemed like a normal couple.
She earlier told prosecutor Aaron Perkins she last saw Ms Liu on the day the Crown believes she was killed, before she herself left the home for a walk with her husband.
She told the court it was not unusual for Mr Xue's silver car to be parked on the roadside.
