Davis jury to start deliberations on Thursday

6:14 pm on 10 June 2009

A jury will begin considering on Thursday morning whether a Christchurch man accused of raping and murdering a schoolgirl is innocent or guilty.

The body of Marie Davis, 15, was found in the Waimakariri River in April last year.

Dean Cameron, 39, a road worker, denies the charges.

The Crown says Mr Cameron had both the knowledge and opportunity to commit the murder.

His blood was found at Ms Davis' house; his semen was found on her body; records show his cellphone was near both the Davis home and the river; and three people saw a vehicle fitting the description of his car at the river.

The defence says an alcohol-affected Ms Davis went to the river for a sexual encounter; either suffered one of her dizzy spells and slipped in and drowned; or committed suicide.
