Canterbury fugitive faces more charges

11:57 am on 10 June 2009

A man who spent three months on the run from police has reappeared in Christchurch District Court facing 62 new charges.

William Stewart, 47, was captured two weeks ago.

The new charges add to a growing list of offences he is alleged to have committed.

These include 43 counts of burglary as well as illegally possessing a firearm and assaulting a police officer.

Mr Stewart stood handcuffed in the dock, cleanly shaven but still sporting his trademark long hair.

He represented himself, asking Judge Jaqui Moran if he could be remanded for another two weeks to seek a lawyer.

Mr Stewart told the court he would be defending the 70 or so charges he faces but wants a lawyer to enter a formal plea.

Judge Moran remanded him in custody for another two weeks.
