Nurse among four new swine flu cases

7:55 pm on 11 June 2009

The number of confirmed cases of swine flu in New Zealand has risen to 27, up four from Wednesday, and includes a nurse who worked one shift at an Auckland hospital on Monday.

The Auckland nurse and her child both tested positive for swine flu after returning to New Zealand on Saturday from a holiday in Britain.

The other two latest cases are in Waikato.

The nurse worked a shift at Auckland City Hospital's renal medicine and transplant ward on Monday and the child attended the ABC Childcare Centre in Meadowbank the same day.

Auckland District Health Board says the nurse and her child began to show flu-like symptoms only on Tuesday evening.

Auckland District Health Board chief medical advisor David Sage says precautions have been put in place to prevent the further spread of swine flu at Auckland City Hospital.

Dr Sage says staff at the hospital have identified and isolated all those who may be affected, including 19 staff and five patients who were on Ward 71 on Monday and were in close contact with the nurse.

The ward has been closed to further admissions.

The childcare centre has been closed and is likely to remain so until at least Tuesday.

The Ministry of Health says that, of the confirmed cases, 10 are still in isolation at home, while all other cases have been treated and the people have fully recovered.

Test results for the Gisborne Boys' High School group suspected of contracting swine flu while on a trip to Brisbane have come back negative.
