A strong French team has defeated a largely inexperienced All Blacks side 27-22 at Carisbrook in Dunedin.

New Zealand flanker Adam Thomson suffered a broken hand and will be out of the game for six weeks, while hooker Andrew Hore has rib damage.

The pair join an already lengthy injury list, making the second Test against France next weekend an even trickier proposition.

Canterbury flanker George Whitelock and Waikato front rower Aled de Malmanche have been called in from the Junior All Blacks as cover.

France dominated for most of the game in the two nations' first encounter since France knocked New Zealand out of the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

France's fourth victory in 21 Tests against the All Blacks on New Zealand soil was based on an outstanding defensive effort, scoring three tries to two.

France led 17-11 at halftime. The All Blacks then pulled back to 17-17.

But French fullback Maxime Medard scored a late intercept try to seal the win, grabbing Luke McAlister's pass during an All Blacks attack and running 60 metres untouched to give his side a 10-point margin with nine minutes remaining.

While centre Ma'a Nonu scored with less than five minutes left to bring the hosts within five points, the French held on to the ball and kicked deep into New Zealand territory to ensure the All Blacks could not snatch a late comeback win.
